‘Atmosphere was quite tense’: Old African hospital closes two wards due to lack of doctors

The crisis meeting follows the announced closure of 30 medical care and rehabilitation beds and 11 geriatric medicine beds.

On Tuesday, November 7, a meeting of the medical-geriatric center was held at the center of the Emil-Borel Hospital. During it, a decision was made to temporarily close 30 beds in the Medical Care and Rehabilitation (SMR) department and 11 beds in the geriatric medicine department from Monday, November 13, 2023. And this is due to the lack of doctors.

Also a week ago, Mayor Sebastien David, also president of the hospital’s supervisory board, called a crisis meeting at the hospital “so that everyone can unblock the situation. A situation in which we cannot be the consequence of the difference in practitioners’ remuneration. The crisis meeting was held on Monday morning and lasted two and a half hours.

“Today we stop taking”

“It was a meeting with all the main actors of the hospital, doctors, Sébastien David, managers, representatives of the administration and staff, about twenty people,” comments Benoît Durand, interim director of the Millau and Saint-Affrique hospitals. Everyone is similar. The goal is to admit patients to the hospital. We discussed and exchanged a lot in search of lasting solutions. We all talked about the ways in which we are currently working to offer physicians a solution to allow patients to be admitted back into beds that are not yet closed. Today we stop taking admissions.”

For CGT representative Régine Sauveplane, “the atmosphere was quite tense because no one is satisfied with the current situation. Everyone is proactive and looking for solutions to open beds for patients as soon as possible and in the best conditions. Nothing constructive came out of this first meeting. Others will follow.”

“Take a step towards the other”

To Sébastien David, each stakeholder expressed: “The training consisted of everyone stepping up to the other and providing a small solution. The study will create a new on-call and security organization at the medical and geriatric center. to see if it is administratively possible. Which would allow doctors to be admitted , who come from outside the European economic community, but also trainees who work as doctors. Something that is currently impossible.

The second element is that we are no longer talking about closing beds, but we are temporarily stopping new admissions. This allows hospital staff to continue their work. All these adjustments are important. Because otherwise it can affect access to the emergency department. I thank each of the main characters around the table, doctors and non-doctors alike, for stepping up against each other. As a result, the public health service at the Emil-Borel Hospital Center has grown.

The deputy director at two hospitals in Millau and Saint-Affrique took up her post last week. Her name is Sabrina Beldoiantz. She is in charge of administrative, legal affairs and communication.

Closed meeting between doctors

At the end of the afternoon of Monday, November 13, Ibrahim Taleb, President of the Institution’s Medical Commission, confirmed that no decision was made during the crisis meeting: “The whole world gave their opinion, but no decision was made. Resumption of SMR due to lack of consensus between doctors and administration. I asked my three geriatric physician colleagues to meet with them behind closed doors this Tuesday morning to try to work out a solution with them.
