Emirati minister ranked among the 100 most influential people in AI by Time magazine

LONDON: The magazine named the Emirati minister time as one of the 100 most influential people in the field of artificial intelligence.

The list highlights leaders, innovators, creators and thinkers “who are transforming today’s AI landscape.”

Omar al-Olama, 33, was appointed UAE Minister of State for AI, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications in 2017.

Over time, he was recognized in the “shaper” category.

Al-Olama told the magazine that UAE leaders “believe that instead of waiting for this technology to come to us as a byproduct of other people’s decisions and reacting to something foreign, we need to be the country best prepared for positive and negative aspects of AI. .

He added that a global treaty was needed to manage this fast-growing sector.

“At first I thought we could do a lot in the UAE and stand on our own two feet. But today I am 100% sure that we cannot manage this technology on the island,” he said.

“We can’t do it alone. You have to do it with others. And we need to do it in an apolitical and truly global way. We therefore need a global treaty that includes everyone,” he said.

Al-Olama described the UAE’s approach to managing AI as an “interesting model”.

“We understand that we are in a unique position. We are a medium-sized country and have been investing in AI for several years. We are therefore somewhat more advanced in this area than many other countries,” he noted.

However, he stressed that the UAE cannot compete with China and the United States, nor is it trying to do so.

“Our role is to be a facilitator first and to use our power to support all the AI players,” he concluded.

Among other people who appear on the list timeinclude Elon Musk, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Anna Eshoo, US Congresswoman.
