Project Vruddhi field coordinators visited Shilpu in the village of Sabarkanth in Gujarat state to counsel this new mother and her farm worker family on exclusive breastfeeding methods, to teach them how to monitor their baby’s growth and explain its importance. for Shilpa to eat a nutritious diet.
During their visit, they discovered that Shilpa’s diet was compromised due to misconceptions related to the socio-cultural context. When they arrived, Shilpa was weak and sick. It was the second time she fell ill since giving birth. The situation was alarming as Shilpa was at risk of malnutrition at a time when her nutritional needs were high.
Shilpa’s mother advised her to eat only semolina (dogs) to facilitate digestion and improve the intestinal tract. After giving birth, Shilpa ate only semolina for three months. Although semolina is good for new mothers, there are disadvantages when eating nothing else. Field coordinators advised him to include green vegetables, fruits, lentils, millet or wheat bread and rice in his daily diet.
