Glyphosate: The European Commission reauthorizes the controversial pesticide for 10 years

Here we are again 10 years. The European Commission has renewed the authorization of glyphosate 10 years in 27 European Union countries, despite strong opposition from scientists and environmental organizations.

This Thursday, November 16, 2023, 27 European Union countries failed to agree on its reauthorization, reports the European Commission. A vote was organized in the morning. Failing that, the European Commission has made a decision.

A controversial pesticide

Since 2015, this active ingredient in several herbicides (including Monsanto’s Roundup, which is very widely used around the world) has been classified as ” possibly carcinogenic ”, developed by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer.

In July 2023, however, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) stated that it had not identified any “critical concern areas” for humans, animals and the environment that could hinder the herbicide being granted authorisation.
