Plastic pollution in the world’s oceans is one of the biggest environmental problems of our time, affecting nearly 700 marine species and contaminating the marine food chain with toxic pollutants.
Ocean Cleanup is an international non-profit project whose mission is to clean the world’s oceans of plastic. Since 2018, various technologies have been tested with the help of Maersk Supply Service and AP Moller – Maersk’s logistics and maritime operations. Ocean Cleanup has now successfully developed a system that can consistently collect large amounts of plastic from the ocean. The next step for The Ocean Cleanup is to validate the system from an engineering and ecological perspective to demonstrate to governments, institutions and other funders that there is a viable technology for cleaning the oceans from plastic.
Maersk Supply Service, AP Moller – Maersk and The Ocean Cleanup have agreed to extend their collaboration to complete system validation. Maersk Supply Service and AP Moller – Maersk will provide support for the program, which includes project management, operation of two Maersk Supply Service vessels towing the system, as well as logistics services for waste collection and transport for recycling. At the same time, the AP Moller Foundation will provide a one-time grant to The Ocean Cleanup.
Validation of the system is expected to be completed by 2024. end and will include a review of the environmental impact of plastic pollution compared to the greenhouse gas emissions of related vessels.
Once the technology and system are validated, The Ocean Cleanup believes it will be able to garner support from the public, governments and other foundations to ensure that by 2025
Maersk Supply Service and AP Moller – Maersk have been instrumental in the journey from initial concept to operational system at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and I am extremely grateful for their commitment to the point where we are ready to expand. with an additional donation from the AP Moller Foundation is a welcome contribution to our 2024 mission.
