UT continues its climb up the U.S. News Undergraduate Rankings

AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas at Austin has moved up its ranking among the nation’s top universities, according to the latest US News & World Report undergraduate rankings. UT Austin rose to No. 9 among the state’s public universities and remains the No. 1 public university. 1 in Texas. Among public and private universities, UT climbed six places to 32nd.

“UT’s continued journey up the rankings is a reflection of the exceptional talent we continue to attract; our commitment to unparalleled, life-changing academic, research and campus experiences that are affordable; and the opportunities that exist in Austin as a hub of innovation and culture,” said President Jay Hartzell. “Many of our top-ranked programs in computer science, artificial intelligence, engineering, design, business and psychology make significant contributions to the U.S. economy and provide our graduates with exceptional career opportunities where they can make a significant impact and change the world.”

The McCombs School of Business moved up two spots to No. 5 in the nation this year, and 12 of the school’s majors made the top 10, with accounting retaining the top spot. The Cockrell School of Engineering ranked 11th in the nation with six majors ranking in the top 10. The computer science program ranked 11th, with five majors landing in the top 10, including the newly added category for artificial intelligence. Undergraduate research rose four places to no. 15. UT continues to be the top university in Texas for veterans, increasing its national ranking to no. 16. The university also ranked no. 16 among the “most innovative schools” in the country.

US News reviewed several undergraduate disciplines this year, and UT earned top 10 rankings in many of them. Twelve of McCombs’ majors earned top 10 status:

  • 1 in accounting
  • 4 in business analytics
  • 4 in Finance
  • 4 in insurance risk
  • 4 in management
  • 4 in management information systems
  • 4 in marketing
  • 6 in the field of real estate
  • 7 in manufacturing operations
  • 7 in the supply chain
  • 8 in quantitative analysis
  • 9 in entrepreneurship

The Cockrell School of Engineering earned a top 10 major in six categories:

  • 2 in petroleum engineering
  • 7 in construction
  • 7 in Environmental Engineering
  • 8 in Computer Science
  • 9 in aerospace engineering
  • 9 in Chemical Engineering

The computer science program earned rankings among the top 10 majors in five categories:

  • 7 in programming
  • 8 in computer systems
  • 9 in theory
  • 9 in cyber security
  • 10 in artificial intelligence

Other top rankings in areas of interest include:

  • 15 – Undergraduate research
  • 16 and no. 1 in Texas – Best Schools for Veterans
  • 16 – The most innovative schools
  • 16 – Study abroad
  • 20 – Psychology program

The US News rankings are one of the most widely used measures of undergraduate programs nationally and are based on 19 key criteria, such as graduation rates and student outcomes, faculty resources, professional opinion, financial resources and student excellence.
